VISIT TO BERKELEY

Thursday 9th September

Join us for a visit to Berkeley, Gloucestershire, to enjoy a day visiting this unique town.

Berkeley Castle has been lived in by the same family for over 900 years. It is where history has been made, where Edward II was murdered, where the Barons of the West gathered before Magna Carta and where Queen Elizabeth I hunted and played bowls.

Where other castles were romanticised or "modernised" by the Georgians or the Victorians, Berkeley quietly survived as what it is: a Norman fortress with an enclosing curtain wall, built and enlarged through the mediaeval period and beyond into a secure, comfortable, substantial home.

A few minutes walk away is the Edward Jenner Museum, the home of the man who demonstrated that by deliberately giving his patient a dose of cowpox, an immunity against smallpox developed, i.e. vaccination. The many other less well known talents of this intriguing man are illustrated in the Museum.

Both venues and the town of Berkeley have a variety of places providing refreshments.

Leave Wells at 9.30 am, return at approx 5.30 pm.

Cost: £19.50 each - Covers coach cost, driver’s gratuity and entry to both Castle and Museum (concessions). Please complete the cutout slip at the end of the Wells U3A Spring 2010 Newsletter and send with your cheque payable to Wells U3A to the contact name and address on the form.

I have arranged a meal where we shall have the opportunity to sample several traditional dishes and have made a booking for Tuesday 28th September. A coach has been booked to take us there and back and we shall leave Wells Bus Station at 11.30 am returning to Wells by about 3.30 pm.

The cost of the meal will be £14 per head and the coach £5 per head. Both prices include gratuities.
