WALKATHON TO BRISTOL TO MEET THE OLYMPIC TORCH

The Wells U3A together with other U3A groups from North Somerset have agreed to participate in a ‘walkathon’ being organised by the Bristol U3A.

The plan is for a number of U3A groups from North Somerset to converge on Blagdon and then combine and complete the walk to Bristol with the aim of arriving in Millennium Square, Bristol, just before the arrival of the Olympic torch on the 22nd May.

Participation in the walkathon is open to all members of the Wells U3A and all are welcome to join us.

The plan is to walk to Bristol over 5 days in 2012.

A number of U3A groups from North Somerset plan to converge on Blagdon and then combine and complete the walk in stages to Bristol.

The plan is to walk to Bristol over 5 days in 2012 namely on 7th February, 1st March, 30th March, 4th May and finally 22nd May.

The first leg of the walkathon is to walk from Wells to Priddy and we plan to assemble outside the Wells Town Hall on the 7th February at 10.0am and start walking at 10.15am. The Mayor and Town Crier have kindly accepted our invitation to be present to start us on our way. A photographer from the Wells Journal will also attend to cover the start.

We will head across cathedral green and up New Street before following footpaths to reach the top of Milton Lane. We will walk through Model Farm and then tackle a steep ascent to reach the top of the Mendip plateau. We will climb about 220 metres from Wells to the top. Thereafter, we follow well-used footpaths and drove roads to Priddy. There will be some muddy stretches and there are about 9 stiles.

Any members of the Wells U3A interested in joining this venture should contact Peter, leader of the walking group,  before the 31st January.

See the latest copy of Wells U3A Newsletter for contact details.

Ethnic Eating

Our last lunch at The Golden House Chinese restaurant was another successful and happy occasion. We sampled many different dishes and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Thank you to Yvonne and her team for looking after us so well.

Our next outing will be to The George Inn at Croscombe. Our hosts Peter and Veryan Graham, whose new chef Pascal has worked with top chefs in London before coming to Wells, specialises in Mediterranean cooking and has offered to prepare a Spanish meal for us – it sounds super! The cost of the meal, including gratuities, will be £15.50 per head. As the restaurant only seats 24 people comfortably, I have booked two days, Thursday 16th and Friday 17th of February at 12.15pm. Bus number 162 leaves Wells Bus Station at 12.00 and number 161 leaves The George Inn at 2.12 for the return journey, or we can share transport.

To rsereve a place please see the Winter Update of the Wells U3A Newsletter.
